It all began with a simple desire: to spend my birthday on the pristine beaches of Puducherry. So, I packed my bags, left Delhi behind, and embarked on a journey that would not only fulfill this dream but also reunite me with an old friend after 30 long years. My adventure was about to unfold from Chennai to Mahabalipuram.
Puducherry: Where History Meets Tranquility
Arriving in Puducherry, we were greeted by the soothing waves of the Bay of Bengal. Our home for the stay was the Hotel Promenade, nestled along Promenade Beach. The allure of waking up to the gentle lullaby of the sea was irresistible, so we decided to treat ourselves and opted for rooms with beach views. The additional 2,000 rupees per night was a small price for such an exquisite experience.
Promenade Beach in Puducherry is famous for its picturesque beauty and tranquil ambiance. Stretching along the Bay of Bengal, it’s renowned for its long, pristine shoreline, inviting promenade, and iconic Gandhi Statue. Visitors flock to this beach to enjoy leisurely walks, breathe in the fresh sea breeze, and savor stunning sunrises and sunsets.
Exploring Puducherry’s History
Puducherry – “The French Riviera of East,” a coastal union territory in India, boasts a diverse history. It was part of various South Indian dynasties, including the Cholas and Pallavas. In the 17th century, it became a French colonial outpost and remained under French rule until it joined the Indian Union in 1962. This colonial legacy is evident in its architecture and culture. Puducherry played a crucial role in India’s struggle for independence.
The city’s heart, White Town, takes you back in time with its French architecture, pastel-colored buildings, and tree-lined streets. It’s the perfect place for leisurely strolls and discovering quaint cafes that offer a taste of both French and Indian cuisines.
Aurobindo Ashram: A Spiritual Oasis
A visit to the Aurobindo Ashram is a must when in Pondicherry. Sri Aurobindo and The Mother founded this spiritual haven dedicated to integral yoga. We felt a sense of inner peace as we explored the ashram’s serene courtyards and library. The ashram serves as a retreat for spiritual seekers from around the world, and it’s here that one can learn about the teachings and philosophies of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother.
Matrimandir Inner Chamber: A Missed Opportunity
Unfortunately, our timing meant we missed the chance to enter Matrimandir’s Inner Chamber, as it was a Sunday. Nonetheless, we captured its distant beauty from a viewpoint, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
This tranquil haven, often shrouded in an air of mystery, is now open to visitors every morning except Tuesdays and Sundays. The Inner Chamber offers a profound meditative experience, but remember that space is limited. To avoid any disappointment, sending your booking requests 3 to 7 days in advance (up to a maximum of 10 days) is advisable. Remember, same-day appointments are never an option.
You can visit the official website for more detailed information and booking procedures.
Birthday Bash at Zurba
My birthday celebration was an unforgettable highlight of the trip. We headed to Zurba, a lively club where Hindi and English music filled the air. Surrounded by friends, old and new, I danced the night away, reveling in the joy of the present and the nostalgia of the past.
Puducherry Beaches: Where to Go and Where Not To
Regarding beaches in Puducherry, it’s essential to make the right choice. We learned this hard when we decided to skip the crowded and less-than-pristine Marina Beach. Instead, we opted for the serene and cleaner shores of White Town and Rock Beach. With its laid-back atmosphere, Serenity Beach was another gem we explored, making for a perfect escape from the bustling city.
Mahabalipuram: A Historical Sojourn
As our journey neared its end, we stopped in Mahabalipuram. Here, we marveled at the exquisite Shore Temple and the enigmatic Five Rathas, witnessing the intricate artistry of ancient times. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was the perfect finale to our adventure, leaving us in awe of India’s rich cultural heritage.
With Mahabalipuram behind us, we returned to Chennai, knowing our journey had only begun. Stay tuned for the next chapter of my travel blog, where I delve into the wonders of Chennai and share more remarkable experiences. Until then, keep exploring, and may your journeys be as vibrant as mine.
